New York City has nine schools designated as Specialized High Schools. The nine Specialized High Schools are one way that New York City supports the educational needs of students who excel academically and/or artistically, including English Language Learners and students with an IEP or 504 Plan.

The Specialized High Schools are administered by the Department of Education, New York City. And the only way an applicant can get into any of these specialized high schools is through standardized entrance exams dubbed the Specialized High School Admission Test (SHSAT).

Not all nine Specialized High Schools require this SHSAT for admission though. LaGuardia, one of the nine specialized schools of Music & Arts and Performing Arts requires the applicant to build a portfolio and pass an audition to gain admission into the school.

Stuyvesant is one of the largest and most well-known specialized high schools in the city, recognized for its impressive alumni, rigorous academics, and quality course and extracurricular offerings.

The School is the hardest among the eight SHSAT-required schools to gain admission. The has consistently posted the highest SHSAT cutoff scores for prospective applicants.

In 2022, the cutoff score at Stuyvesant High School was 563, the highest as compared to Queens High School For The Sciences at York College with 541; The Bronx High School of Science with 551; Staten Island Technical High School with 525; HSMSE @ CCNY with 549; HSAS @ Lehman with 541; Brooklyn Technical High School with 546; and The Brooklyn Latin School with 545.

Out of the 30,000 applications each year, only 800-850 applicants actually make it into Stuyvesant. This only confirms how difficult it is to get into Stuyvesant.

Stuyvesant currently has about 3,344 enrollment and of which 58% are male and 42% are female. The school is constantly ranked among the top schools in New York City and the nation.

According to USNEWS’s latest rankings;  Stuyvesant ranked 36th in National Rankings, 3rd in New York High Schools, 4th in New York, NY Metro Area High Schools, and 3rd in New York City Public Schools High Schools.
