One controversy plaguing Stuyvesant High School is the Student diversity (minority enrollment) percentage or racial distribution of the students. In an earlier post, we covered the demographics of Stuyvesant High School.

So in this article, I will throw some light further on this. That is the percentage of student diversity or minority enrollment or non-Americans at Stuyvesant High School.

Stuyvesant as we know is one of the nine designated specialized high schools in New York City. The school was established with the sole purpose of assisting the residents of New York with gifted children to develop academically and artistically.

The city of New York is not only one of the most populous cities but also known for its racial diversity. There are all kinds of people from different races, and ethnicity residing in the City of New York. The city is one of the most racially diverse cities in the world.

One would expect the same diversity in the cities priced jewel Stuyvesant, but is it the case in the prestigious school? We’ll find out pretty soon.

What do race and ethnicity mean in our modern society as we intend to look at Stuyvesant High School race percentages?

The Washington University in St. Louis- STUDENTS defined race and ethnicity as a concept of dividing people into groups on the basis of various sets of physical characteristics and the process of ascribing social meaning to those groups.

Ethnicity describes the culture of people in a given geographic region, including their language, heritage, religion, and customs.

What Are Stuyvesant High School Race Percentages?

Now that we have understood the concept of race and ethnicity, let’s look at its representation in Stuyvesant.

What Is Stuyvesant High School race percentage?

Jews students heavily dominated Stuyvesant High School for the most part of the 20th century. It was only in the 70s that the school began seeing an influx of Asian students.

In 2013, 72.3% of the entire student body were Asians. The rest were made of 21.44% Caucasian, 1.03% African American, 2.34% Hispanic, and 3% unknown/other.

For a school in one of the most racially diverse cities in the world, it looks like it’s been heavily dominated by Asian most of which Asian Americans.

The school has over the years seen a sharp decline in the admission of blacks and Hispanics. This has resulted in a controversial plague hanging the school with some activists calling the system of entry racially biased towards Blacks and Hispanics.

If the current population of the school as of this article is 3,344 then the following is the number of students in the school based on their race and ethnicity.

Asian – 71.9% of 3,344 is a little over 2,400 students. It shows how Asian Americans are still dominating Stuyvesant high school.

White – 18.3% of 3,344 means there are about 611 White students. Hispanics – 3.8% 0f 3,344 means there are about 127 Hispanic students in Stuyvesant.

Two or more races – 3.5% of 3,344 equals 117 multi-racial students. Blacks – 1.4% of 3,344 equals 47 Black students. American Indian/Alaska Native – 0.7% of 3,344 equals 23 American Indian/Alaska Native students.

Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander – 0.6% of 3,344 equals 20 Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students.

This gives Stuyvesant High School a minority enrollment of 81.7% of the student body (majority Asian), which is higher than the New York state average of 59% (majority Hispanic and Black).
