For some time now, Stuyvesant has been plagued with controversies about the demographics of the student population in the school.

Even though the school started out initially as an all-boys school, it changed its policy and began accepting female students after it was sued.

For the most part of the 20th century, the school was heavily dominated by Jewish students. It was only in the 70s that the school began to see an influx of Asian students.

The majority of them were Asian-American students. In the 2013 academic year, 72.3% of the entire student body were Asians. The rest were made of 21.44% Caucasian, 1.03% African American, 2.34% Hispanic, and 3% unknown/other.
